NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 (PG for brief profanity, mild comic action)
Here's one of those crazy movie anomalies. It's a silly idea made at the highest level of film production (cleverly mounted, brief but entertaining dialog, nicely photographed, using a multitude of computer generated effects to good effect, decent acting) - all brought together by director Shawn Levy to make 110-minutes zip by effortlessly. There's even a smidgeon of moral here, if that helps to make the silliness more palatable.
The plot continues from the original film, in which Ben Stiller as a night watchman in the NY Museum of Natural Science becomes involved with all the exhibitions coming to life from late night until the dawn of the next day - with all the complications that might exist among such disparate works of art, dioramas, animal recreations, etc. Many of the former exhibits now are being crated & sent to the Smithsonian for safe storage - a tragic move for Stiller and his familiar friends. He follows them and with the aid of his son at a computer finds the crates in the bowels of their new home; as you might suspect, the complications double, the new exhibits (including a Lichtenstein painting, Jeff Koon's giant balloon creations, and global hoards of diverse military) on the rampage. It's all good fun, doing exactly what its producers wanted it to do: never straying below the level of clever, light-hearted escape humor. A plus: a delightful tour, in and around two great museums - some made on location, others recreated in Vancouver.
