HANNAH MONTANA THE MOVIE (Rated G)
Not having had the dubious pleasure of seeing the Disney channel series, I can only say that Miley Cyrus & her real life father who also portrays her father in the movie are a team to be reckoned with. Miley (that's her name in the movie as well) is out to supercede all Pollyana types that preceded her, from Shirley Temple to Haley Mills and beyond.
After some publicity shenanigans, our superstar is banished to her grandmother's home in Crawley Meadows, Tennessee, where she must do double duty as the sweet local girl and - in long, blonde wig - the famous Hannah Montana. Think the Beverly Hillbillies on a sweet pre-teen level and you've got the picture.
With her radiant smile, her brilliance in bypassing obstacles, her sophisticated singing and sweet adorability beyond belief, she could menace a diabetic. Toss into the mix a conflict with a greedy guy who wants to turn the town into a thriving money-maker, plenty of dopey slapstick (sitting on eggs, messing with a crocodile, falling off roofs, pratfalls, a shopping disaster) all the while creating a big fund raiser that includes country Western music, down home accents you could cut with a butter knife, and that squeaky clean, forever smiling 16-year-old who is dumb like a fox - a Lohan-type idol for the pre-teens.
The 102-minutes are painful for anyone over the age of 10, but, hey, that's the target audience who will bring in the bucks. Peter Chelsom directs with a consistent aim at little girls while the entire cast is perfectly molded to that effect. To that extent, it does exactly what it's supposed to do.
