THE PINK PANTHER 2 (for some profanity, unseemly action)

The less said the better about this follow-up on the Peter Sellers original. Steve Martin's bumbling Inspector Clouseau makes little attempt to imitate the original; it relies instead on Martin's own specialty in portraying a totally inept person unwittingly creating havoc around himself as he clashes wits with Chief Inspector Dreyfus (John Cleese) in trying to find the mysterious "Tornado" who has become adept at stealing the finest art and jewels around the world.

A script from Scott Neustadter, Michael Weber and Steve Martin is a mix of broad, exaggerated, mostly destructive, humor and some amusing, more sophisticated jokes (a posh Italian restaurant called "La Plata de Nada" for example) - the latter obviously from the normally fertile Martin mind. The whole thing is harmless enough, but hardly up to the master comic's powers - in fact, actually embarrassing to watch as he waddles, grimaces, spouts drivel and generally panders for laughs at the lowest level. Director Herald Zwart is capable, but not inspired. It's a 92-minute time waster.
