PUSH (PG-13 for profanity, teen drinking, sequences of violent action)
A documentary-like preface tells us about Nazi experiments to create a special kind of super people who keep dying. Eventually, a new generation of such people - called Watchers, Shifters, Siffers, Shouters, etc. according to their specific talents - spread throughout the world. Controlled by Division, they are either put to nefarious use or hunted down and destroyed.
If you accept that preposterous premise, you can then glide through the equally preposterous situations, settle back and enjoy them for what they offer in thrills, suspense and - best of all - a great travelog through Hong Kong's impressive streets, riversides, hovels, and restaurants; it's a panoply of sights, sounds and ethnic varieties which director Paul McGuigan - along with colorful, grainy camera shots by Peter Sova - stylishly guides us through with fascination and it's almost worth the price of the film itself. Special effects, incidentally, outdo the best of kung-fu type flicks.
Chris Evans as a sometimes capable Mover, Dakota Flanning as a teen Seer, and others with their psychic specialties on display take us through a wild cat/mouse game for survival that winds up with the ubiquitous, flashy, destructive and noisy battle to conclude. Absolutely sugar-high induced, but - oddly - the cast of thousands, the zippy hide/seek games, the mysterious "McGuffins" and the deadly serious attitudes of all the originally styled characters hold interest, at least while watching them. Suspend believability and it's 110:00 of just plain fun.
