UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS (R for ongoing bloody violence, some sexuality)

When a movie is not screened for critics, suspicion - rightly, in this case - calls for caveat emptor. In this prequel to the last two "Underworld" flicks, which were far more interesting than this 3rd one, we find ourselves back in the dark ages, rejoining the centuries-old battle between a pack of werewolves (the Lycans) and vampires (The Death Dealers) in what might be considered the unlikely spawn of the earlier "Spartacus" and "Romeo & Juliet."

Lycan Lucian (Michael Sheen) falls for voluptuous daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra) of vampire Viktor (Bill Nighly) in a derivative plot devised by Danny McBride, Dirk Blackman & Howard McCain (loads of blood, lust, slave revolt, and big, noisy finale) - slam-bang mangled by first-time director Patrick Tatopoulos. For a bloody good time, this satisfies, but as yet another fantasy-horror flick, it's absurdly overwrought and something to ignore.
