MY BLOODY VALENTINE (Rated a strong R for grisly images, graphic brutal horror, strong sexuality and graphic nudity, pro)
If it's a return you want, to the old-fashioned gore of the "Friday the 13th" kind that permeated Hollywood screens in the early 80s, this is your meaty meal for nearly two hours of nonstop pickaxe gougings.
This updated version of the 1981 Canadian "epic" is new in two ways; in its 3D presentation (which, fortunately, was not seen at our theatre) and in its introduction to graphic scenes of simulated sex with female victim cavorting in total nudity before being bloodied up. (Don't arouse your hormonal expectations; these scenes are too awkwardly presented to raise testosterone levels; embarrassment and disgust are more the reaction.)
Plot, when Lion's Gate host of writers and director Patrick Lassier permit it to run its natural, suspenseful roller coaster course, has to do with Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles) returning to his father's mine - 10 years after an accident there killed five men, leaving one still alive, apparently to turn into a pickaxe wielding avenger. When Tom has time from his mining problems he turns his attention to former sweetheart Sarah (Jaime King), now married to Tom's formerly best friend Axel, the town sheriff. Trouble brewing on all sides!
This version of the earlier movie is less stupid, with no idiotic teens running scared through their familiar paces, but it does live up to the bloody pattern set. It is stylishly filmed and reeks of suspense; if only Lussier directed with a stronger hand instead of letting seasoned TV actors do the interpreting for themselves, line by preset line, this might have been an updated, cheesy, enjoyable slasher film.
